There are two play areas at O'Hare International Airport. (They are located within the security checkpoints, so you would need to be a ticketed passenger to access these areas.) They are operated by the Chicago Children's Museum. The one in Terminal 2 is called "Kids on the Fly" and the one in Terminal 5 is called "Play It Safe."
In "Kids on the Fly," children can use their imagination as they interact with airport models, such as a helicopter, an airplane and a control tower. It is updated with new activities every year. The mom who alerted me to this area has a two-year-old and said it was great! So if you're in O'Hare with a cranky toddler, give one of these play areas a try and let us know about your experience.
Along with the play areas, there are a couple other exhibits that may be of interest to older children. There's a Brachiosaurus Dinosaur on display in the B concourse of Terminal 1. It's a four-story high, 72-foot long skeleton model from the Chicago Field Museum. The Butch O'Hare WWII Fighter Airplane Exhibit is located in Terminal 2. It's a replica of the historic fighter plane flown by airport namesake Edward "Butch" O'Hare.
There are also several family companion restrooms throughout the airport for families with small children and anyone else who would need extra assistance. Terminal maps can be found here.
